Correction and Retraction

Journal of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability Education (JEESE) is committed to maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and completeness of the scholarly record. Once an article has been published, changes are made only under limited and clearly defined circumstances. JEESE follows recognized standards of publication ethics and correction practices, including guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), to ensure transparency and trustworthiness.

Corrections

A correction may be issued when an article contains errors or omissions that do not invalidate the overall findings but require formal amendment for accuracy and clarity. These may include errors in:

  • factual details
  • author names or affiliations
  • data presentation
  • references or citations
  • other relevant components of the article

When a correction is issued:

  • The original article remains part of the scholarly record
  • A formal correction notice is published
  • The correction notice is linked to the original article
  • The reason for the correction is clearly stated

If the correction affects interpretation, discussion, or conclusions, this will be explicitly indicated.

Retractions

A retraction is issued when an article can no longer be considered reliable. Retractions may occur in cases including:

  • Unreliable findings due to misconduct or honest error
  • Plagiarism or significant unattributed overlap
  • Duplicate or redundant publication
  • Unauthorized use of data or materials
  • Unethical research practices
  • Serious authorship or ethical violations

When an article is retracted:

  • The article remains accessible to preserve the scholarly record
  • A retraction notice is published and linked to the article
  • The reason for retraction is clearly stated
  • The notice indicates whether the retraction was initiated by authors, editors, or the publisher

Articles are not removed except in rare cases involving legal, ethical, or safety concerns.

Publisher Corrections

Publisher corrections may be issued when errors arise from editorial or production processes, such as inaccuracies in metadata, titles, author information, affiliations, or publication details.

In such cases:

  • The article may be updated
  • A formal notice will describe the correction

Minor typographical or formatting errors that do not affect meaning or interpretation may be corrected without a formal notice.

Article Replacement

In exceptional cases, an article may be replaced with a corrected version when significant publication errors affect the accuracy of the scholarly record.

When replacement occurs:

  • The corrected version is clearly identified
  • The correction date is provided
  • A notice explains the reason for replacement

Post-Publication Responsibility

Authors must promptly notify the Editor if significant errors are identified in their published work. Concerns may also be raised by readers, reviewers, or institutions.

JEESE will evaluate all concerns carefully and may request clarification, supporting evidence, or institutional involvement before determining the appropriate action.

Editorial Basis

All decisions regarding corrections and retractions are made to preserve the integrity and transparency of the academic record. JEESE adheres to recognized ethical standards and may consult COPE guidance when addressing post-publication issues.
