Journal History

Journal of Sustainability and Community Empowerment (JSCE) emerged from a broader academic movement dedicated to advancing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Indonesia.

The roots of this movement can be traced to the Gerakan ESD Indonesia, an open academic and professional community bringing together individuals committed to promoting and implementing ESD in Indonesia. From its early development, the movement has fostered research, educational initiatives, and collaborative projects involving academics from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), and other higher education institutions.

Over the years, the collaboration expanded beyond academic research to include teacher development, school-based ESD implementation, student sustainability projects, community engagement, and national initiatives such as the 40 Days Challenge for Sustainability. These activities have provided a practical foundation for connecting sustainability knowledge with education, participation, and action.

The development of this collaborative movement led to the formal establishment of Gerakan Pendidikan untuk Pembangunan Berkelanjutan Indonesia as a legal association, recognized through the Decree of the Minister of Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. AHU-0000530.AH.01.07.TAHUN 2026, dated 21 January 2026. This formalization marked an important stage in strengthening and expanding the movement's contribution to ESD and sustainable development in Indonesia.

Building on this academic and collaborative foundation, Journal of Sustainability and Community Empowerment (JSCE) was established as a scholarly publication platform to disseminate research and scholarly work connecting sustainability knowledge, contextual learning, and community action.

Published by Dharma Samakta Edukhatulistiwa, JSCE extends this tradition of collaboration into academic publishing. The journal provides a dedicated space for empirical and applied research on sustainability education, ESD, science and STEM education for sustainability, local knowledge, community participation, environmental action, and other contextually grounded approaches to sustainable development.

JSCE published its inaugural issue in 2026, bringing together studies that reflect the journal's emerging focus on connecting sustainability knowledge with education, local contexts, community engagement, and meaningful action.
