Publication Ethics and Misconduct

Journal of Sustainable Social Studies Education (JSSSE) is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal. This statement outlines the ethical standards expected of all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, the Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Board members, reviewers, and the publisher, Dharma Samakta Edukhatulistiwa. It also explains how the journal addresses allegations of research misconduct. This policy is guided by the principles and best practices promoted by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

The publication of articles in JSSSE contributes to the development of a credible, coherent, and respected body of knowledge in social studies education, sustainability education, civic education, and related interdisciplinary fields. Published articles reflect the scholarly quality of the authors and their supporting institutions. Because peer-reviewed publication is an essential component of academic communication, all parties involved in the publication process are expected to uphold high ethical standards.

As the publisher of JSSSE, Dharma Samakta Edukhatulistiwa takes responsibility for ensuring that editorial decisions are conducted independently and are not influenced by commercial interests, advertising, sponsorship, or other financial considerations. The editorial process must remain transparent, fair, objective, and academically grounded.

Allegations of Research Misconduct

Research misconduct includes, but is not limited to, fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, citation manipulation, unethical authorship practices, data manipulation, and other serious violations of research and publication ethics related to the conduct, reporting, review, or publication of scholarly work.

When research misconduct is suspected in a submitted or published manuscript, the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board have a duty to protect the integrity of the scholarly record. JSSSE will investigate allegations seriously, fairly, objectively, and confidentially in accordance with COPE-informed procedures.

If a submitted manuscript is found to involve research misconduct, the manuscript will be rejected. If a published article is later found to contain serious ethical violations, the journal may issue corrections, expressions of concern, retractions, or retraction and replacement notices depending on the nature and severity of the case.

The initial stage of handling allegations involves determining whether the complaint is credible and whether it falls within the scope of publication ethics concerns. The journal may request clarification or supporting documentation from the corresponding author on behalf of all co-authors. Additional expert review, including methodological or statistical evaluation, may also be conducted when necessary.

Where appropriate, authors’ institutions or affiliated organizations may be contacted to conduct formal investigations beyond the authority of the journal. JSSSE expects institutions to conduct proper and transparent investigations when serious misconduct is suspected.

Publication Decisions

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for deciding which manuscripts submitted to JSSSE should be published. Editorial decisions are based on scholarly merit, originality, methodological rigor, clarity, relevance to the journal’s scope, and significance to readers and researchers.

Editors may consult members of the Editorial Board and reviewers in making publication decisions. Decisions are also guided by journal policies and applicable legal requirements concerning defamation, copyright infringement, plagiarism, and related ethical matters.

Complaints and Appeals

JSSSE provides procedures for handling complaints and appeals related to editorial decisions, peer review, editorial management, reviewer conduct, publication ethics, and conflicts of interest.

Complaints may concern delays in editorial handling, unfair editorial decisions, inappropriate reviewer conduct, citation coercion, peer review manipulation, or ethical concerns regarding published articles. All complaints and appeals will be evaluated carefully, objectively, and promptly based on available evidence and, where appropriate, in accordance with COPE guidance.

Post-Publication Discussion and Corrections

JSSSE welcomes responsible academic discussion after publication. Post-publication issues may be addressed through letters to the editor, correction notices, expressions of concern, or retractions. The journal is committed to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.

Fair Play

Editors evaluate manuscripts solely on academic merit, intellectual content, and relevance to the journal, without discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, nationality, citizenship, institutional affiliation, or political beliefs.

Confidentiality

Editors and editorial staff must not disclose information regarding submitted manuscripts to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate. All materials obtained during the editorial and peer review process must be treated confidentially.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Editors and reviewers must not use unpublished materials disclosed in submitted manuscripts for personal research without explicit written consent from the authors. Any editor or reviewer with conflicts of interest must withdraw from involvement in the editorial or peer review process related to the manuscript.

Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial Decisions

Peer review assists editors in making editorial decisions and helps authors improve the quality, clarity, and scholarly contribution of their manuscripts.

Promptness

Reviewers who feel unqualified to review a manuscript or unable to complete the review within the required timeframe should notify the editor promptly and decline the review invitation.

Confidentiality

Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents and must not be shared, discussed, or used for personal advantage without authorization from the editor.

Standards of Objectivity

Reviews should be conducted objectively, fairly, and constructively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should provide clear arguments and evidence to support their evaluations.

Acknowledgement of Sources

Reviewers should identify relevant published works not cited by the authors and inform the editor about any substantial overlap or similarity with previously published or submitted work.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Privileged information obtained through peer review must remain confidential and must not be used for personal benefit. Reviewers should avoid reviewing manuscripts in which conflicts of interest exist.

Duties of Authors

Reporting Standards

Authors must present accurate, honest, and transparent accounts of their research. Manuscripts should include sufficient detail, appropriate references, and clear reporting to allow evaluation and, where applicable, replication of the study.

Data Access and Retention

Authors may be requested to provide raw data, supporting documentation, or additional materials for editorial review and should retain research data for a reasonable period after publication.

Originality and Plagiarism

Authors must ensure that submitted manuscripts are original and properly cite all sources, data, and ideas derived from other works. Plagiarism in any form is unacceptable.

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication

Authors should not submit the same manuscript simultaneously to multiple journals or publish substantially similar work without proper disclosure and editorial approval.

Acknowledgement of Sources

Authors must appropriately acknowledge publications and contributions that influenced the reported work.

Authorship and Contributorship

Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made significant scholarly contributions to the study. All co-authors must approve the final manuscript and agree to its submission.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial, institutional, or personal conflicts of interest that may influence the interpretation or findings of the study. Sources of funding must also be clearly acknowledged.

Fundamental Errors in Published Works

If authors discover significant errors or inaccuracies in their published work, they must promptly notify the editor and cooperate in correcting or retracting the article where necessary.

Ethical Oversight

Research involving human participants, animals, confidential data, hazardous materials, or sensitive procedures must clearly state compliance with ethical and legal requirements, including ethical approval and informed consent where applicable.

Data Sharing Policy

JSSSE supports responsible research transparency and encourages authors to share research data, instruments, protocols, analytical methods, and relevant supporting materials whenever ethically and legally appropriate.

Anti-Plagiarism Policy

All manuscripts submitted to Journal of Sustainable Social Studies Education (JSSSE) must be original and free from plagiarism. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published or simultaneously submitted to another journal.

Authors are fully responsible for ensuring the originality of their manuscripts and for properly citing all borrowed ideas, data, words, figures, and other materials.

To prevent plagiarism and other forms of unethical publication practices, all submitted manuscripts may be screened using plagiarism detection software such as Turnitin, iThenticate, or similar tools. Manuscripts found to contain plagiarism, substantial unattributed overlap, fabricated citations, or other serious ethical violations may be rejected immediately. Depending on the severity of the violation, the journal may impose sanctions, including temporary or permanent restrictions on future submissions.
